NPT Presents: Fundamentals of the SR&ED Tax Incentive Program

An educational session about the SR&ED (Scientific Research & Experimental Development) Tax Incentive Program is being held by NPT LLP Chartered Accountants in London at the Centre for Imaging Technology Commercialization (CIMTEC) on Wednesday, 27 May 2015 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

You will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals from SR&ED professionals, including:

  • Definition of SR&ED for income tax purposes
  • Overview of various tax credits
  • Basic tax planning strategy
  • CRA’s views on SR&ED and how to prepare for the audit
  • Brief review of recent changes (legislative and court interpretations), including a discussion using specific case studies
  • Information about the Ontario Business Research Institute Tax Credit (OBRITC) and Ontario Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit (OIDMTC)

The evening will include presentations by three specialists who have a comprehensive understanding of the technical and financial aspects of filing a SR&ED claim, followed by a question and answer period.


Douglas Plummer
Senior Tax Partner, NPT LLP
Doug joined NPT in 2000 as Manager-Taxation Services and practices almost exclusively in the tax field. Doug has experience providing tax advice to many different businesses over the years, and prides himself on developing unique and creative solutions to problems and opportunities in the owner-managed field.


Shaun Brown
Senior Manager, Tax, NPT LLP
Shaun Brown began his public accounting career with NPT in 2007 as part of the firm’s assurance group, and transferred to the firm’s tax group after obtaining his CA designation in 2010. Shaun works primarily with healthcare professionals and other owner-managers on tax compliance and planning issues. He also manages the firm’s personal tax season, providing training and IT support to the NPT team.


Frank Naccarato
President, The Empyrean Group Inc.
Frank has a total of 25 years of engineering and management experience in a number of R&D fields, including aerospace, robotics and medical devices. Frank’s projects include a control algorithm used aboard the International Space Station. He holds a US patent as co-inventor of an automated testing machine for microbiology laboratories. Frank has been with Empyrean since January 2002.
